About Triou

Triou is a classic jazz piano trio reimagined for a contemporary stage. Inspired by the great trios of the jazz tradition, the group forges its own path with a vibrant blend of music from the American Songbook, beloved South African favourites, and reframed modern pop—all delivered with the joyful, infectious energy that only Triou can bring. The band features renowned figures on the broader Cape Town Jazz scene, namely Blake Hellaby on piano, Sean Sanby on bass, and the wonderful, Stellenbosch based, German import, Pascal Haas on drums. Pianist Blake Hellaby weaves Western harmony with African rhythm and emotional depth. Rooted in the jazz tradition yet boldly innovative, he works across concert stages, studio production, and visual albums, and is known for his technical clarity and soulful improvisation. He lectures part-time at UCT and continues to push the language of contemporary South African jazz. Bassist Sean Sanby is one of Cape Town’s most sought-after session musicians, with a career spanning major theatre productions, global tours, and collaborations with leading South African and international artists. His debut album Out of the Candlelight earned a Mzantsi Jazz Award nomination, and through his creative studio SeekArt, he develops multidisciplinary projects that merge music and visual media. German-born drummer Pascal Haas blends the subtlety of modern jazz with the pulse of African and global groove traditions. Trained in Germany and shaped by collaborations across Europe and South Africa, he brings a refined touch and melodic sensibility to the trio. He lectures at Stellenbosch University—where he is completing his PhD, conducts the SU Jazz Band, and performs widely. Together, Triou brings a fresh, dynamic voice to the South African jazz landscape
